OK. This ad isn’t exactly the brainiest or most complicated of concepts, it is a good series of ads nonetheless. What better way to sell a car, and promote a sport that is already loved, than by having the bombshell Victoria’s Secret model Adriana Lima star in it? The concept might be simple and might exploit the fact that men need just a few simple things in life to convince them – however, it is done in a clever and humourous way. The plot features Lima trying to convince Americans to watch the sport by her arrival in a swanky Kia car, at an American football field, or at a bar or garage, where the all men are watching a sport other than football. Simple, sexy but gets the message across. Viva la Brasil!

The big name in headphones and music systems does a very decent job of not trying too hard with this ad. The narration creates a dramatic build-up feel, and is great because it shows the process football players face when getting ready for a big match. The song, “Jungle” by X Ambassadors & Jamie N Commons adds to the fever the ad creates and leaves you feeling thoroughly pumped up for the World Cup. Plus, it features a fair amount of Brazilian football star Neymar – with the powerful narration done by his father Neymar da Santos Silva, Sr., as well as shorter snippets of Javier Hernandez, Daniel Sturridge, Suarez and Mario Gotze for some added eye candy as well as cameos of Serena Williams, Nicki Minaj, Lebron James and Lil’ Wayne.

Nike: The Last Game

This ad, which features some big names in the game, like Brazil’s Neymar and David Luis, Portugese gem Cristiano Ronaldo, Spain’s Andres Iniesta, England’s Wayne Rooney and Sweden’s (who are unfortunately not on the world cup squad) Zlatan Ibrahimovic, is thoroughly innovative and we think even Pixar could sing high praise for the attempt. The five-and-a-half minute long animated mini-movie of sorts, shows the top players being replaced by clones of themselves who have been genetically modified to be super, unbeatable football players and hence render the human players jobs redundant. It has a good amount of humour injected into it, as it shows some hilarious potential day jobs of the players, in the event of their being out of a career. Of course, our favourite football talents beat the clones and prove their worth, as we hope they will on the field this world cup.

Mcdonald's Gol

We loved this ad because of the sheer fact that it was so enjoyable to watch. McDonald’s kept with their usual style of fun-loving ads and this one did not disappoint. We especially loved the fact that it showed an old man and a sexy young woman, dribbling like real pros in front of an audience. It shows us that football is a game for everyone, young and old alike.

Coca Cola outdid themselves with this ad. Despite the fact that it came out two months ago and is relatively outdated when compared to the other advertisements we have picked, we thought it deserved an honourable mention, because it is, after all, about the essence of the World Cup as a whole. The message is an emotional one and it shows how football is a game that brings everyone together – it transcends political, social and economical barriers and has even improved the lives of many. It might be a little idealistic but what’s the harm in making people feel united and utterly euphoric?

As the world gathers together this month to celebrate this glorious sport (along with its glorious-looking players) and cheer their favourite countries on, the biggest brands in the world are competing neck-and-neck to come up with some of the best advertisements for the FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
