A Zen beginning: Setting the table right

Hosting a Chinese New Year reunion dinner? Here are some feng shui tricks to set the table and bring harmony to family members.

Elegant candles and flowers
When setting the table in preparation for your reunion dinner, pay attention to shapes. Avoid rectangular tables or assembling them in an L or T formation.

You should also avoid seating your expecting sister-in-law at a corner. Symbolically, the sharp angle of the table pierces the stomach and can also rekindle family feuds! In the absence of a round or oval table, a buffet will allow guests to move and talk to whoever they want… resulting in good vibes circulating as well. Be sure to also note the harmony of colours. Opt for more orange, the colour of harmonious communication (blue may inhibit free flow of conversation). But not in excess: red napkins + orange tablecloth + square plates = lively, electric yang conversations!

And if ang pows are not your thing, why not treat your family to some gifts? Opt for Zen touches, such as miniature plants or a Rubik’s cube. Stay away from knives, paper cutters, or cacti though!
