Singapore’s colonial setting becomes the latest runway for Lagerfeld’s sumptuous creations.

If there is one collection that those of us living in a year-round summer would be looking out for, it has to be the Cruise. No wonder then that Karl Lagerfeld has picked this side of the world to launch Chanel’s Cruise 2014 collection.

Inspired by Lagerfeld’s personal take on the tropical climate, colonial past and heritage of Singapore, the most recent collection made its debut in a deserted army barracks on Dempsey Hill – which was transformed for the occasion.

Contrast between the humble and old setting and the polished and luxurious looks was evident, and the collection looked airy and light as it is expected from the holiday line to be.

The styles varied from the tomboyish cricket-inspired ensembles – complete with a bat embossed with the Chanel logo – to sporty chic mini-dresses, elegant ensembles and eveningwear which despite the glamour looked easy to wear thanks to their relaxed silhouettes.

And true to signature Chanel, all the looks were in black, navy blue and/or white, and there was noticeably a lot of trousers from cropped to wide legged and even under some dresses and skirts as we’ve seen on the label’s runway of A/W13 collection.

Ankle-length pencil skirts and dresses had a fresh twist with a small slit in the front or in some instances a slight ‘mullet’ effect.

Accessories were also a mix. From Chanel’s classic pearl necklaces, earrings and even belts for cocktail looks, to chunky metal chain chokers which added a slight tough edge especially to the lace pieces.

Light, chic and effortless; even the ruffled cocktail dresses and fully sequined coat gown had a sense of ease about them which makes them highly-wearable as well as covetable.

Apart from the beautiful clothes, the show saw some of Lagerfeld’s favourite models strut the runway including IT fashion girl of the moment Cara Delevigne, Lindsey Wixson, Saskia de Brauw and Chinese model Ming Xi who were flown in especially for the occasion.
