Chocoholics rejoice! The cocoa used in your favourite treat has now been officially designated as a “healthy food”.

Chocolate lovers can now indulge in their favourite dessert with less guilt, as it is confirmed that its main component, cocoa, is good for us after all.

The European Commission has accepted the request of a ‘health claim’ submitted by the world’s leading cocoa manufacturer, Barry Callebaut. This latest claim suggests that the daily intake of 200mg of cocoa flavonols (equivalent to 2.5 g of cocoa powder and 10 g dark chocolate) improves blood circulation.

The manufacturer and its customers – to whom it provides the cocoa powder – will be able to print on the labels of their chocolate or chocolate drinks that ‘cocoa flavanols help maintain the elasticity of blood vessels, which contributes to normal blood circulation.’

For now, those who conducted the studies and provided scientific evidence will have this exclusive health claim for 5 years. After this period the phrase that chocolate is ‘good for the blood circulation’ can be used by all brands.
