5 Aussie labels you should know about

A born and bred Aussie, our in-house fashionista Yvette King sums up the best of the best when it comes to fashion labels from Down Under. Read and learn…

I was a very lucky girl able to grow up in beautiful Sydney, Australia. Aside from all the things Aussie’s are famous for like Steve Irwin, “shrimps on the barbie” (in fact we call them prawns) or Kangaroos and Qantas, fashion has really put Australia on the map. Collette Dinnigan and Sass & Bide are now global household names with the likes of Halle Berry to Kate Bosworth rocking out their clothes. However, here are the top 5 Aussie labels you need to know about.

Hunt No More

This is an extremely contemporary, easy, ready-to-wear label for the modern working day girl, who like to enjoy a cocktail at night. Interesting hues and patterns combined with strong lines makes Hunt No More one of the Aussie labels I think you should keep an eye on. Right now I’m crushing on The “Night Rebel” skirt.

Evil Twin

A style of clothing that is as completely hipster as it is Alexa Chung, Evil Twin is completely accessible. The style is laid back and reeks of effortless cool. I would love the “X-Rated” woven tee-dress from the “Filth and Fury” collection to be a staple in my wardrobe.

Lover

Feminine, chic, romantic, whimsical and down right beautiful are some of the words I would use to describe Lover. A signature Lover garment is a lace dress layered on top of a nude lining. This brand is a one-stop-shop for sophisticated cocktail dresses. I’m in love with Lover’s “Valentine Fitted Dress” with a fabulous halter-neckline.

Josh Goot

Encapsulating the idea of a “high-tech body con”, Josh Goot reminds me with some of the geometric shapes of a wetsuit on steroids – hugging a woman’s figure in all the right places. A little bit of payful resort mixed with a splash of business seriousness equals a perfect receipe for a Josh Goot look to qualify for OOTD (or Outfit Of The Day). The “Corset Wrap: Off The Shoulder Dress” is calling my name.

Dion Lee

Minimalism at it’s best pretty much sums up Dion Lee. Interesting fabrics, tasteful cutouts and pops of primary colour certainly have caught my eye. Lee’s pattern-making skills are evident in his engineered clothes – essentially, this label achieves the whole sexy but without trying aesthetic. Oh and did I mention there’s swimwear? “Echo Skirt – Line II” is sublime.

It’s pretty obvious Aussies like a non-chalant style. Maybe it come with the territory of beach and cosmopolitan living or maybe it’s just the Aussie attitude of being chilled. Regardless, it’s hard to just stop at praising five fabulous Australian designers, but it’s a good start. Oi, oi, oi!
