The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

“I always preferred Halloween to Christmas (sorry Santa!) and hence this movie hits a chord with me as it deals with the battle between Halloweentown and Christmas Town. With nightmarish but lovable characters, great animation from Tim Burton and even better music (Just thinking of the movie makes me sing What’s This? in my head) it is my ultimate go-to movie during this time of year.“

Scary Movie (2000)

“If anyone knows one fact about me, that would be my undeniable love affair with horror movies, the freakier the better. However, if at a cinema and I were to choose a movie between horror and comedy, comedy trumps horror, hands down. And the deal only gets sweeter when it’s horror with a sufficient dose of comedy. Hence, my favourite movie(s) to watch on Halloween would be the entire Scary Movie franchise. All I’ll need are some spooky candy, ghoulish-looking popcorn and my Halloween-inspired Bloody Mary cocktail!”

The Addams Family (1991)

“When it comes to the most classic Halloween movie, you can’t go wrong with the original Addams Family – made in 1991. I’m not much of a horror movie fan, so anything that includes ghosts and surprise scary scenes is a complete no-no in my books. Eccentric and totally chuckle-worthy – from the costumes, to the makeup, to the casting – there’s no better way to spend Halloween curled up on the couch with a box full of treats watching this classic film. Happy Halloween!”

Kick Ass (2010)

“Call me a coward, but I’ve always steered clear away from horror ever since I was old enough to watch movies. Horror has never been my cup of tea, and never will be. The closest I would ever go for Halloween movies however, is gore – comical gore for that matter. In the spirit of Halloween and all that fancy dress up, no movie would be more fitting than Kick Ass. Quirky, vibrant and comedic, this movie has a knack for making gore more palatable, and Halloween a lot more light-hearted. Bloody tears and spewing guts? Too passé.

Pan’s Labyrinth (2006)

“Pan’s Labyrinth is one of my all-time favourite movies that’s also by one of my favourite directors. Although this doesn’t exactly fit into the genre of horror, this brilliant movie weaves fantasy, mythology, poetry and elements of horror better than any movie I have seen. It can both intrigue and terrify anyone, whether or not they’re as young and precocious as Ofelia. A great Halloween movie for sure.“

Interview with the Vampire (1994)

“As most French girls, I don’t typically celebrate Halloween and in addition, I hate scary movies. Nevertheless, I pick “Interview with the Vampire” by Neil Jordan as my favourite Halloween movie.

The story follows a 200-year-old vampire who shares his story with a young reporter. As a result, it’s a good combination of thrills and sensuality alongside an interesting take on immortality. Plus, it’s lovely to watch Christian Slater, Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise in period-appropriate costumes.”

Edward Scissorhands (1990)

“My favourite Halloween movie will not be a scary movie that’ll give you sleepless nights or one filled with nightmares. My pick would be Edward Scissorhands. Together with sweet popcorn and ice cream, this is the ideal set up for a perfect Halloween night.”

I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)

“Personally, I’ m not a great fan of Halloween. To be honest I’m a wimp. When it’s too violent it makes me nauseous and when it’s too psychological I can’t sleep for several weeks. That is why my favourite one is the perfect combination of teen movies from the 90’s and a little freaky but not too gory. ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’  has the advantage of being so predictable that it gets funny. And, above all it’s one of the only horror movies I can watch and sleep well after it – the best reason in my opinion.”
