Parisians are known for their chic style and their reluctance to wear shorts. Coincidence? Maybe not. Read on to find out how to wear shorts without looking gauche.

On most days, Singapore’s temperature exceeds 30° Celsius. Our little island is hot — there’s no question about it. But we’ve learned to embrace the year-long summer that has the Northerners green with envy.

We cope and brave the heat in the latest crop tops, colourful sundresses and staple shorts.

But daisy dukes (and bikinis on top)? Unless you’re going to the beach, wearing super short shorts is a highway to gauche-ville, despite how bright the sun is shining outside. Here’s how to stay chic and classy whilst wearing shorts:

1. Keep your butt cheeks private

Though you might win some glances here and there, exposing too much skin won’t help you achieve a graceful, chic look. Pay attention to how short your shorts are before purchasing them. Try them on in the fitting room and bend forward, see if you’re showing too much behind. If you’ve already got one at home, simply pair them with tights or consider switching to the much classier bermuda shorts or culottes.

2. Keep it low

Try not to pair your shorts with high heels to avoid looking ‘too much’. Instead, opt for loafers, ballet flats, or any other type of flat shoes. Although, sports shoes might be too casual and sport for trendy-wear. If you must wear heels, then keep it low-key with simple ankle-strap heels or low espadrilles platforms.

3. Dress it up

As shorts exude a casual vibe, dress it up a little to look more fashionable. A white button-down shirt is unfailingly chic, and so is a blazer.

Our gallery is a collection of streetstyle snapshots and runway pictures from this year and past years to inspire you. Valentino glammed up their shorts with intricate embroideries, while Oscar de la Renta kept it sweet and simple with gingham and pastel plaids.

With these tips and pictures in mind, you’re now set to take Singapore in shorts, chic as you can be.
