As the new year is just round the corner – our Editor in Chief looks at the most exciting films to anticipate and the nominations for this year’s first major awards, the Golden Globes.

As much as I look forward to fashion week season, I have to admit that the movie awards season is one of the highlights of my year.

Yes, I love my shoes, but if there is anything I enjoy more than sashaying down the streets with my latest pair of Valentino rockstuds, it’s going to the movies every weekend or curling up in my couch with a glass of red and watching a Wong Kar Wai masterpiece.

So as you’d expect, yesterday was a big day in my calendar as the Golden Globes nominees for 2014 were announced. Getting to know who will hit the red carpet this year is certainly exciting (how else would we know what kind of fashion to expect?) but identifying which are the must-watch films of the year is what’s it all about.

From comedies to dramas and popular TV series, this year had a lot of interesting entries, some of which I’ve already seen and others which I cannot wait to watch.

Starting with the dramas – I was very pleased to see that Richard Linklater’s Boyhood was nominated for 5 awards (Best Motion Picture – in Drama, Best Supporting Actor and Actress, Best Director and Best screenplay) all of which are very well deserved for this original movie that was more of a profound journey filmed over 12 years with the same actors. An achievement in movie-making I would say!

Other contenders for best drama were Steven Hawking’s biopic The Theory of Everything (a must-watch for all fans of the scientist and his ground-breaking theories), Selma (an American historical drama dealing with the civil rights movement), Foxcatcher (a biographical crime drama with Steve Carell, Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo) and The Imitation Game (the much-talked about WWII thriller featuring the oh-so-charming Benedict Cumberbatch). Surprisingly, Gone Girl was not nominated in this category, however, actress Rosamund Pike is up for the Best Actress gong.

As for comedies, the most anticipated film of the year would be Alejandro Gonzalez’s Birdman (with Michael Keaton, Emma Stone and Edward Norton) which will be competing with The Grand Budapest Hotel, Into the Weeds, Pride and St. Vincent.

Actors-wise, I’m mostly excited to see one of my favourite actors Edward Norton up for an award, alongside talented actors like Mark Ruffalo, Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler), Robert Duvall (The Judge), Benedict Cumberbatch, Micheal Keaton, Ralph Fiennes (The Grand Budapest Hotel) among others. It looks like Hollywood has got it right this time but there is no question I’d vote for team Edward all the way!

The best actress nominees showed an interesting mix of veteran and newcomers as well. Julianne Moore is up for two Best Actress awards this year, one for Still Alice and the other for Maps to the Stars. While the fashionistas would be happy to know that some stylish stars such as Jennifer Aniston (Cake) and Emma Stone (Birdman) and Keira Knightly (The Imitation Game) are up for gongs too. Last but not least, the legendary Meryl Streep scored her 29th nomination for her role in Into the Woods. Will she win it this time round? Don’t forget to tune in on January 11 to find out.

As for myself, I’ve already made my to-watch list for 2015 and I have to say it’s looking good!

The full list of nominees can be found on the Golden Globes website.
