To celebrate its 170th year of stellar winemaking, Penfolds is collaborating with LINLEY in creation of a truly fine wine, bringing two countries together.

The wine afficionado in you will be delighted to learn that, in celebration of their 170th year of winemaking, iconic Australian wine makers Penfolds, has unveiled their new collaboration with British cabinet maker, David Linley, who has been commissioned to create a number of bespoke signature cases for the creation of a fine wine.

‘LINLEY for Penfolds’ celebrates the birthplace of founder Dr. Christopher Rawson Penfold, who was born in London but relocated with his wife to South Australia in 1843, and purchased 500 acres of land for a vineyard they named the Margill Estate.

The ‘LINLEY for Penfolds’ wine room has been designed to showcase the Penfolds Icon and Luxury wines, in addition to house a rare, fine wine of choice.

The wine of focus is the 2010 Bin 170 Kalimna Shiraz – a wine so extraordinary, it has only been created once before, 41 years ago. This fine wine is a single block, single vineyard wine and is sourced exclusively from old vines planted in the Kalimna Vineyards in the Barossa Valley of Southern Australia.

Time-honoured techniques, ultimate artisanship with fine attention given to detail, ingenuity and creative spirit and sophistication are necessary to create the perfect cases and David Linley was picked as the perfect candidate because of LINLEY’s ability to reflect all of those qualities, in addition to its long history of fine craftsmanship, dating back to 1844.

The collaboration, inspired by Max Schubert’s ‘secret’ Grange vintages, features seven imperial six litre bottles and is the result of a symbolic connection of two countries through history and materials – English oak from the birthplace of Dr. Christopher Rawson Penfold and fumed eucalyptus, to represent his new home in Australia.

Some of the unique features of the bespoke imperial case include a compass marked with intricate detail and precision engraving, which can only be opened by turning the precious jade inset dial to the longitude and latitude coordinates of Margill Estate, to reveal the magnificent imperial bottle inside. In addition to this wonder, the exterior of the box features a Penfolds crest and a secret drawer built into the box, which will be customized with the purchaser’s name and bottle number (from one to seven) and which LINLEY describes as being, “one of the most challenging features to include in a piece of furniture.” Inside the secret drawer, the owner can find a stunning photographic journey of Kalimna as well as a Certificate of Authenticity.

If you thought that wasn’t nearly enough, the case also features a synethetic hygrometer, combined with a bimetal thermometer for measuring the perfect room climate for the wine, a barrel inspired interior and a wine pourer.

A limited edition LINLEY for Penfolds magnum case and 750 ml bottle case have also been crafted in honour of this special release.

The collaboration extends to a bespoke Penfolds Wine Room, a new edition to the LINLEY flagship store located at 60 Pimlico Road, London.
