We test this promising new line from the leading Korean beauty brand and judge whether or not it achieves that milky-white dewy look we so crave.

Of the many fears Asian women face about their appearance, one thing you will find us constantly lamenting about is our skin tone – in particular, the tri-coloured undertones that result in an uneven, sallow and dull complexion. For that reason, whenever we can fit it into our busy schedule, we end up spending large amounts of money on facials and other desperate methods to lighten and brighten our skin – methods that often yield few lasting results.

Korean beauty brand Laneige has seemingly come up with the answer to all our problems this spring, with the release of what they promise will make regular users’ skin, two tones brighter, after as little as two weeks of use. Using their innovative and proprietary safe mild formula and MelacrusherTM whitening technology – incorporating Truffle Yeast, Green Tea extract and Vitamin B3 components, which aid in lifting off the melanin veils that cause discoloration of the skin, resulting in pure, flawless, radiant-looking and visibly brighter toned skin.

We reviewed a few of the products in Laneige’s White Plus Renew line and this is what we thought:

The White Plus Renew Bubble Cleanser  (approx. USD27 for 150ml) – A great start to your White Plus Renew beauty regimen. In addition to smelling great, it works very well on sensitive skin because it has a smooth texture and it creates a nice rich lather without causing an invasiveness that some facial washes can. The product is meant to penetrate deeply into the pores to remove all residual dirt built up during the day and it usually takes two big pumps and lathering on for at least a minute, before washing it off, to feel the true refreshing benefit.

The White Plus Renew Skin Refiner (approx. USD36 for 120ml) – This refiner works much like a toner – as it has to be applied onto a cotton pad, except it is less strong and less thick than some toners we have used. It is water-based and creates a cool sensation against the skin, as it is meant to soften the skin texture. It is also mildly scented which is a pleasant addition to the product.

The White Plus Renew Emulsion (approx. USD36 for 100ml) – This product is smooth and thin for a creamy emulsion and leaves a nice thin coating on the skin after the recommended application, as it is meant to prepare the skin for the maximum whitening effects achieved in the next step of the skin care process. It is gentle on the skin and goes on easily, leaving a mild and cool sensation.

The White Plus Renew Original Essence (approx. USD62 for 40ml) – This product is a wonder in itself. Mildly formulated with the cleanest ingredients and mineral oil, without any animal ingredients or artificial pigments – it is meant to achieve 6 essential functions – Luster, Moisture, Brightness, Evens Skin Tone, Slows Melanin Rate and Reduces Dullness. The essence comes in drop-form and is very mildly creamy, leaving a refreshingly cool finish that seems to absorb right into your skin upon application and stays for hours after.

The White Plus Renew Original Cream (approx. USD49 for 40ml) – This deeply moisturizing whitening cream is great for use under make-up and before bedtime and creates a lasting glow as it penetrates deep into the layers of your skin. It enhances the effects of all the steps in the White Plus Renew beauty regimen.

The verdict:

As I have sensitive, combination skin, with a particularly oil-prone T-zone, the Laneige White Plus Renew products worked wonders for me in the two weeks I tried them. They were refreshing and didn’t create any sort of irritation or burning sensation and rather, left my skin feeling energized and hydrated. I have been a patron of Laneige for quite some time and have tried a variety of their products – all of which I have been satisfied with. This line of products, however, yielded the best benefits I have ever noticed from any of the other Laneige products I have tried. What I liked most is the fact that all the products weren’t thick and creamy but rather light and supple on my skin, upon application. My skin is definitely more radiant, my skin tone has evened out plenty and is definitely brighter – it is at least an entire shade fairer than it was prior to my use. So although it didn’t give me that milky-white dewy look I’d been hoping for in the two short weeks I’ve tried it, I would recommend it to any Asian woman who shares the similar complaint of a patchy skin tone or a dull complexion, as it has definitely enhanced mine. For that, it certainly gets a definite two thumbs up from me!

Laneige’s White Plus Renew Line is now available at all Laneige stores and counters.
