Women communicate largely via social media but sometimes in a way that can be hurtful. Dove and Twitter of the power of words their latest campaign.

According to a study led by the global beauty brand Dove, in 2014, women posted more than 5 million negative tweets about someone else’s or their own beauty and body image.

To counter these bad statistics, Dove, well known for spearheading initiatives that inspire female image acceptance and self-esteem, teamed up with Twitter to launch the #Speakbeautiful hashtag campaign to raise awareness about the power of words. Indeed, the hashtag aims to fight against insulting and negative comments on Twitter directed at women and their bodies, and to encourage them to speak more positively about themselves. “It only takes one positive Tweet to start a trend. Let’s change the way we talk about beauty on social media. The power is in your hands!”, the brand stated.

In doing so, a fleet of staff was hired to list tweets featuring key words such as ‘ugly’, ‘fat’ among others, and to respond to each of them in a bespoke way. Friendly comments and advice from self-esteem experts were used to encourage positive digital conversations about online beauty.

But that’s not all, to improve the chance of transforming the bad social media trend into a positive change, the hashtag was paired with a video broadcast at the recent Oscars ceremony in Hollywood.

Words have a huge impact on our self-esteem and confidence; they really matter and influence our behaviour. Use them in a negative way and you will instill sadness and bad energy. Conversely, use beautiful words and you will engender positivity and kindness.

Commendable, right?
