What Singaporeans are eating during the 2018 World Cup, according to Foodpanda

According to Foodpanda, these were the trends that defined the “gastronomical” World Cup 2018.

The final showdown between France and Croatia is almost here, but we’re concerned with a different kind of showdown: a food showdown.

And surprise, surprise – we have the inside scoop into what foods Singaporeans have been wolfing down this World Cup. Whether it’s to drown their sorrows in chicken wings (hello, Brazil fans) or to celebrate a historic win (Korea!), during game nights, Singaporeans were hungry and opted massively for late night delivery options.

In fact, Foodpanda enjoyed nearly a 40 % increase in sales compared to a regular day – now that’s a lot of people opting for a late-night supper.

MOST POPULAR FOODS

The five most ordered foods from Foodpanda were included quintessential Western bar bites: pizza, burgers, and chicken wings, as well as  Asian ‘drunk food’ like dim sum and sushi.

THE HUNGRIEST DAY…

They say that food is the most primitive form of comfort, and the World Cup certainly proved that! According to Foodpanda, the most popular day for World Cup gastronomania was July 7, the night of the nail-biting semifinals between England vs. Sweden and Russia vs. Croatia.

And get this: watchers usually place their orders pre-match so that their food is delivered during the match. You might scratch your heads as to why they would want to be interrupted by the doorbell, but there you have it.

… AND THE HUNGRIEST NEIGHBOURHOODS

Interestingly, there wasn’t an East-West competition regarding the most hungry regions in Singapore, considering how Singapore’s Central and Eastern areas, as well as Hougang/Sengkang, had the most numbers of people who ordered in. Maybe these regions have the most football fans? We don’t know for sure – but remember, correlation doesn’t equal causation!
