This young Indonesian designer has us hooked to her relaxed silhouettes and strong design vision.

We may have trends that guide us on what to wear but these are largely fleeting seasonal trends. It would be a pain to purchase $1000 dress, only to have it relegated to the back of your wardrobe after just one season. The wiser shopping decision would be to scour for timeless designs and classic wearable and breathable looks that could be re-worn countless times – each time styled in a different manner.

Similarly, born out of the desire to create apparel that transcends seasons, Nikicio is an Indonesia-based label that holds a wearable and practical design philosophy.

The sartorial brain behind the label, Nina Karina Nikicio, strongly believes in investing in a wardrobe that lasts for years to come. Her tasteful eye for relaxed silhouettes makes for chic but effortless styling and layering – especially for Asia’s humid weather.

For Spring Summer 2014, the label takes inspiration from the original Little Mermaid classic of Hans Christian Anderson.  In a magical and ethereal manner, the collection is reminiscent of a strong, courageous woman with an equally delicate and romantic side.

Colour cues were taken from the ocean and fabrics from the elements of a beach. From mesh and perforated suede that replicates the texture of sand to pleats that resembled clamshells, the entire collection was majestic yet calming to the eyes.

We love how she has effectively melded two emotions that stand on the opposite sides of the continuum and delivered a dichotomous representation of perhaps what every woman faces in the world today.

Should women be strong headed and courageous or retain their delicate and gentle side or can the two exist harmoniously?

Nikicio has us hooked and we can’t wait to see what she comes up with next!

Nikicio’s Spring Summer 2014 collection is available online.
