Jamie Brewer: First model with Down syndrome to walk at NYFW

The American Horror Story actress made waves yesterday at New York Fashion Week as she became the first model with Down syndrome to walk the runways – a true role model indeed.

Who said that all models needed to be cut from the same ol’ gazelle-like mould? Well, New York-based brand, Carrie Hammer, sure did not think so when she launched her ‘Role Models Not Runway Models’ campaign last year.

It was Dr Danielle Sheypuk who made history by becoming the first woman to ‘walk’ the runway for Carrie Hammer in a wheelchair last year. This year, at New York Fashion Week, the designer enlisted the American Horror Story actress, Jamie Brewer, making her the first woman with Down syndrome to grace the runway.

The 30 year-old actress confidently walked down in a black A-line dress inspired by her role in American Horror Story. “American Horror Story is dark, scary, bewitching so we had to go with black and Jamie has a beautiful body with a teeny waist and curves and we went with an A-line,” the designer said.

Brewer herself is also an activist for people with intellectual disabilities and at 19 was elected to State of Texas Arc Board, where she served for four years.

Kudos to Carrie Hammer for inspiring people that anyone can be a runway model. We especially like that fashion week is becoming an active ground for changing standards and celebrating beauty for what it is, no matter how it’s delivered.
