Cinch & Secure: 7 Styling tips to create a slimmer waist

    Vertical stripes are flattering
    Trousers with vertical stripes create an optical illusion of longer legs and a slimmer bottom, greatly reducing that waistline on a visual scale. Be sure to avoid horizontal lines, especially on blouses and sweaters, which will only end up making your body appear wider than it actually is.

    Invest in high-waisted pieces
    High-waisted bottoms, including jeans, skirts and trousers, tend to sit at the perfect spot on your waist, causing it to look smaller. Just be sure they are fitted right to avoid looking frumpy.

    Choose the right belt
    The right belt can accenturate an hourglass figure. A wide belt between 3 and 6 inches in width can be layered on top of a dress or a long blouse. It will cinch in the midsection and draw attention to the difference in size of your waistline versus your hips.

    A wrap dress will work
    Stylists agree that the wrap dress is a coveted fashion trick that stars and celebrities use to make the midsection appear tinier. Make sure to find a dress that is the right size and made of high quality material to hide those lumps and bumps.

    Nude shoes for longer legs
    Neutral coloured heels with a shade that is close to your skin tone can create the illusion of lengthier legs, which will in turn make your body appear leaner. And the leaner you look, the smaller your waistline will appear. This works well with dresses, mini skirts and even cropped trousers.

    Peplum perfection
    You might think that the extra volume a peplum top provides will just add bulk to your frame, but this is not always the case. So long as you avoid ruffles that are overly flared, you can accentuate your curves and cinch your waist to create a great hourglass silhouette.

    Pencil skirts emphasise the hips and create the illusion of a smaller waist. It is easy to pair a pencil skirt with a peplum top to bring about a very womanly figure.

It is always a matter of perspective when it comes to achieving a slimmer waistline and there are so many clever ways to whittle down your silhouettes without having to go on a hardcore diet. From finding the right pair of trousers to adding a belt that creates the illusion of a tinier midsection, stylists have come up with a surprising number of fashionable tricks that will help you fake that cinched waist and, at the same time, create a figure that is more hourglass and less muffin top.
