It is scientifically proven that the sense of smell is the one which triggers the strongest emotions. This is because olfactory (smell) receptors are directly connected to our limbic system, which is the seat of emotions in our brains.

This means we should all pay more attentiont to the fragrances we choose to wear to an important event.

We caught-up with Singapore-based fragrance expert and perfumer Prachi Saini, founder of Je T’aime perfumery, to get some advice on how pick the right fragrances to make a perfect impression at every occasion.

First date

Unless it’s a blind date, you would most likely know a little about Mr Potential. If you are meeting a gym instructor, athlete or someone into fitness, opt for a fresh and sporty perfume. Athletes typically take very good care of their bodies and are often attracted to fresh or citrusy smells. If you are wearing such a perfume, chances are that they themselves have been using a similar scent too. Even if it’s not exactly the same one you’re wearing, the smell will be familiar. On top of that, such fresh scents signify cleanliness, youthfulness and energetic spirit indicating that you are someone they can have fun and be comfortable with.

If your date works in the creative field, something floral like Chanel No.19 or Daisy by Marc Jacobs will be spot on. Creative people are usually shy, introverted and far more sensitive to smell than sociable extroverts. Florals tend to comfort them as they don’t come across too strong. They are delicate but display an inner strength.

Meeting someone older? Try going woody. As we age, our sense of responsibility becomes stronger and this is reflected in our fashion choices among other preferences. Just like many people in their middle age are attracted to solid colours, they are also attracted to heavier and more woody smells. Such scents show that you are down to earth, sensible and mature.

But what if your date is someone who wears masculine scents? In that case we wouldn’t recommend wearing a spicy perfume. Opposites do attract so a more feminine and subtle scent would do wonders. Delicate florals would be ideal in this case.

An important business meeting

Go very easy on perfumes during meetings. Try something long-lasting, but in spare amounts. You wouldn’t know if your client is allergic to something. An overwhelmingly strong scent would only distract them. On the other hand, stay away from fresh scents because most of them will have a hint of mint which can irritate sensitive noses. If you’re looking to be taken seriously, a woody scent is perfect for exuding maturity and sincerity.

A job interview

Most employers are looking for sensible, dependable, and creative people with energetic spirit and dedication. This culminates into a floral-woody personality with little fresh feel to it.

Burberry Body makes a good choice as it says you are classy, dependable, easy-going and friendly.

Just make sure you don’t overdo it. The last thing you’d want is the interviewer to be overwhelmed with fragrance.

Dinner with friends

For a gathering, wear something that says you’re approachable, warm and friendly. Something floral and not overwhelming like LUX’s Soft Touch body wash.

Meeting his parents for the first time

Try something delicate. A powdery scent which evokes sweet emotions works well and chances are you would be easily accepted in the family. Love Chloe ticks all the right boxes in such a situation.

Important social event (Charity Gala, fashion show, book launch, etc…)

This is the time to make a statement! An oriental perfume is empowering and will make you feel strong, even if you are delicate inside. Try perfumes which say ‘noir’, ‘midnight’ or ‘seductive’. These fragrance terms are indicative of a strong and sensual perfume.
