Move over matte lipsticks, there’s a new kid on the block.

With the amount of matte lipsticks releasing each month, the beauty world is starting to forget the existence of other lipstick formulas such as the frosted or metallic shade. Now these do sound straight out of the 90s, but the trend has been reformulated to be 2016-makeup trendy.

In the past, the mention of frosted lips would bring about an image of shiny metallic foil over the lips – not cute unless you were going for a costume party. Fast forward to 2016 and you have these very same lipsticks but with better light reflectivity. They don’t look as intense, and feel much more comfortable on the lips.

How to get the look

For starters, try layering a frost or metallic lipstick over a matte formula, or apply it underneath a non-shimmering gloss for a pop of dimension. This helps to create a subtle 3D effect. If you are feeling fancy and wish to recreate the popular Instagram trend of holographic lips, simply mix two frosted or metallic lip shades together and blend using your fingers to distribute the product evenly. Using your fingers also gives a lighter coverage as compared to using the applicator directly.

Choosing an appropriate shade

Not every metallic or frosted shade is going to work for everyone. If you have pale or fair skin, opt for warm frost or metallic tones such as gold, baby pink or even wine as they will bring out your features. For medium to tan skin tones, most colours will work for you except for shades with tons of silver shimmer particles – this might wash out your lips and appear slightly dull on the skin tone.
