Done right, a fringe could give you a more youthful look. Get expert tips from Olivier Lebrun, hairstylist at Garnier Fructis.

go for it IF…

  • You have straight hair. Curly ends are a no-no.
  • You want to hide signs of fatigue or wrinkles on the forehead.
  • You want to camouflage a big forehead (or should we say, ‘fivehead’?).

AVOID IF …

  • You have very fine hair, because it may separate into smaller sections, leaving much of your forehead exposed.
  • You’re prone to breakouts on the forehead, because hair traps heat and promotes the development of bacteria under it.

DON’T EVEN TRY

  • To give yourself bangs if you have absolutely no clue how to. But if you really must, here’s a tip or two you can pick up.
  • To achieve curved bangs with too much volume. It might look too heavy and severe on a mature face. However, too flat and the style could make you look worn out. It’s all about knowing your hair type.

HOW DO I PICK THE PERFECT STYLE?

  • To hide crow’s feet, opt for bangs that aren’t too wide and don’t go past the eyebrows.
  • To soften an angular face, don’t be afraid to have your bangs grow past the eyebrows.
  • For narrow faces, pick a more slanted version of the hairstyle.
  • To revive limp bangs, make them a little thicker by gathering more hair from the fringe parting and cutting to the right length.
  • To get rid of dry, split ends, ask for a short trim. Contrary to popular belief, going for frequent hair trims actually encourage quicker hair growth!

HOW TO MAINTAIN

  • Give yourself volume with dry shampoo and lift the roots from the base to tips by directing the hairdryer inward. Finally, add shine with a leave-in conditioner or hair serum.
