For those of you who have pretty curls and ringlets, follow expert hairdresser, Harold James’ advice on how to play with different hairstyles and keep your hair healthy.

Curly, frizzy or fuzzy, the basic problem is the same but the issues lies in intensity. These hair types, more or less, do not allow for the uniform flow of sebum. So we sought the help of Harold James, an expert hairdresser from Dark & Lovely to give us some tips.

Whatever your hair nature, do not shampoo more than twice a week. Doing so risks stripping your scalp, removing the existing sebum and reducing the protective hydrolipidic film. The best thing to do, as Harold James suggests, is to alternate shampoo and co-wash.

For example, wash your hair as usual on Monday. Then on Wednesday or Thursday, use a conditioner instead of a shampoo (the co-wash). This will allow you to refresh your hair and scalp without the use of aggressive washing agents.

Be careful not to confuse this with the No-Poo tendency, which consists of not using shampoo at all!

CURLY HAIR

Here, the curvatures are rather wide so the sebum spreads a little but the hair is still relatively dry.

DO:

Use occasionally a milk or a mask without rinsing with some drops of oil to hydrate the lengths.

DON’T:

– Do not use a comb with teeth that are too tight.

– Don’t use too oily textures that will weigh down the hair and produce a dull effect. Choose a well-balanced oil.

– Do not cut your own hair, especially when it is wet; you could have a nasty surprise when it dries.

– Don’t shampoo every day

FRIZZY HAIR

The curls of frizzy hair are in a corkscrew form and the sebum flows with difficulty. The hair is dry and fragile.

DO

Before shampooing, separate the strands of hair and distribute some oil to the lengths.

Massage the scalp and the lengths to stimulate blood circulation. Leave for 15 min, or even all night. Then proceed to shampoo. (Do not do this before a co-wash!)

DON’T

Do not shampoo every day.

FUZZY HAIR

The curvature is very tight and in a Z shape, hence sebum doesn’t flow. The hair fibres are porous, dull, very dry and very fragile.

DO

– Systematically use a mask adapted to your hair texture to obtain optimal care.

– Apply an oil to the lengths.

DON’T

Wet your hair in the morning before combing. The hair, like the skin, will become drier as the water evaporates. Use a moisturising cream without rinsing to style your hair.
