Laura Mercier, makeup artist and creator of her namesake cosmetics brand, gives us her professional advice on how to ensure your small eyes leave an impact.

1. FIND THE LIGHT

To enlarge eyes that are too small, you have to play with light by choosing light colours that reflect light, as brightening around them is what will make the eyes appear larger. Do not darken above the eye. Smokey eyes, for example, are banned, as they shrink the eye further. Instead, brighten up the eye with concealer and highlights in the corner of the eye and on the brow bone.

2. OPEN UP THE EYE

We can create the impression of opening up the eyes by drawing out an outline in an eyeshadow, eyeliner or eye pencil designed specifically for Asian eyes to open and enlarge the eye. The Golden Rule – the colour should always be lighter below than above, and we can then highlight below the eye, provided we do it accurately, which will open the eyes with its graphic effect (not smokey, then, which that will bring depth and darken the eye). In addition, always insist on a healthy dose of mascara over the lashes to really enlarge the eye.

PRO’S TIP:

You can also enlarge the eyes in length by extending your eyeliner horizontally above and below the eye.
