Lip balms can soothe your chapped lips, or add a pop of colour to your look. Find the perfect one for you with tips from Rimmel makeup artist, Olivier Tissot.

Have you ever looked into the mirror and thought your lips could use a little colour? But in actuality they are too chapped to pull off a full-coloured lipstick?

You can hit two birds with one stone by choosing a tinted lip treatment! They are hydrating and rich with repairing formulas, not forgetting a little pink tint will enhance your complexion as well.

If you’re not sure whether this hybrid lip product is for you, here are some expert tips from Olivier Tissot, a makeup guru from Rimmel:

Wear tinted lip balms if…

– You have thin lips with fine lines, because lip balms can rejuvenate the lips.

– You have fragile lips, because lip balms are rich with repairing properties.

– Lipstick isn’t your thing.

– You’re into the natural look.

Avoid the balm if…

– You are ill and it’s reflected on your face. Lip balms won’t do your complexion any favour.

– You are looking for something that will last you the whole day. Balms aren’t durable.

– You have intense eye makeup that would otherwise go better with red lipstick.

The faux pas

– Using too much lip balm, smearing the glossy product all over and outside your lips.

– Opting for opaque coloured lip balms, beige for instance, because they wash you off.

Useful pointers

“I apply (lip balm) after lining my lips with a lip liner, which brings a more intense look,” Olivier said. “I would add some red to set the balm.”

He would also dab some lip balm on the eyes and cheekbones for a radiant look.

“I choose a lightweight, mattifying foundation makeup like BB cream to contrast the gloss from the balm,” he said. “And then I apply a light blush on the cheekbones and a little mascara on the eyes.”

Sometimes he mixes leftover balm with sugar to make a gentle lip scrub.
