Is Acne contagious?

Does kissing or touching the skin of someone with acne put us at risk of catching it ourselves? Dermatologist Dr Jacques Savary tells us all.

When teens suffer from acne, their younger siblings are usually also affected. Genetic predisposition, or contagion?

“The bacteria that causes acne, P. acnes, is naturally present in the microbial flora of our skin. We thus do not risk getting it from a kiss or a touch, since we are all carriers either way,” said Dr Jacques Savary.

On the contrary, when a local antibiotic is used frequently and/or for a long time to try to overcome acne, it can create resistance. P. acnes becomes stronger and more difficult to treat patients. And it is quite possible to transmit this stronger strain of bacteria via skin-to-skin contact.

This is why when an elder sibling has acne, it is not uncommon that the younger ones also will, and, in their case, is more difficult to get rid of.

“Nevertheless, transmitting a resistant strain of the bacteria does not mean transmitting acne” states Dr Savary. “Pimples usually appear as a result of stress altering our internal immunity, or hormonal imbalances that can be linked to the menstrual cycle, or consumption of contraceptive pills. You should therefore inform your gynaecologist if you are prone to acne, even if your skin is “clean” at the point of consultation.”

Advice of the dermatologists to prevent acne breakouts:

– Do not use too many strong products to clean the face. Opt instead for micellar water that removes oils without irritating the skin.

– Do not use make-up that is overly clogging. Go for an alternative, like liquid foundation.

– Though the sun has an anti-inflammatory effect, it thickens the outermost layer of the skin and as a result facilitates the return of blackheads.

– Though popping pimples may not risk of spread of acne, it can leave scars and promote infection. It may be difficult, but it is better to leave them alone.
