As supermodel Natalia Vodianova is the latest to post a snap of herself breastfeeding, we look at how this whole trend started and the intention behind it.

A little over a week ago, Russian supermodel Natalia Vodianova created quite the stir with a photo she posted on her instagram account. The photo in question showed her in the nude, breastfeeding her fourth child, Maxim, who is the first with her billionaire fiancé Antoine Arnaut. According to the model, it was meant to be part of a birthday gift for her husband and a celebration of motherhood.

The photo was described by most as “stunning” but also got some criticism from some, for being ‘inappropriate’.

Vodianova is not the first model mother to post such a photo believing that there is no greater beauty than that of motherhood – and that there is no shame in such a beautiful act. Other celebrity mothers have taken to the net to express their view on motherhood and the importance of breastfeeding in particular. After all, if a model can do it, there is no excuse for the rest of us, eh?

Earlier this year, model Ashley Nicole created a similar buzz when she posted a photo of herself looking stylish as ever, breastfeeding her baby boy. The amazing photo was captioned, “Was on the way out the door but then mommy duty called… Everything stops for him! #breastisbest #natureisbeautiful #WasMadeForThis.”

But it was Victoria’s Secret angel Gisele Bundchen who started the trend, making headlines back in 2010 when she posted a photo of herself with her son Benjamin. In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, she said,”Some people here [in the U.S.] think they don’t have to breastfeed, and I think ‘Are you going to give chemical food to your child when they are so little? I think there should be a worldwide law, in my opinion, that mothers should breastfeed their babies for six months.”

Miranda Kerr is another example of a supermodel who followed suit, by posting a lovely photo of herself breastfeeding baby Flynn in 2011. Miranda was very open about her breastfeeding, even speaking of how it was going at the time and how she genuinely seemed to love being a mother.

Another mention can be given to the sexy Angelina Jolie, who was photographed in 2008, feeding one of her twins, Shiloh.

These supermodel supermoms have shown us that nothing can come in the way of being a mother and that breastfeeding is a way of celebrating the beauty of the gift of motherhood. Do you agree?
