The newly opened Celebrations & Events Centre at The Singapore Resort & Spa Sentosa hosted us for the company’s global workshop this month. More fun than stressful – here’s the lowdown on our experience.

Let’s face it, spending a 12 hour-long day with colleagues discussing business strategies and operations at our global company’s workshop is not exactly our idea of a fun day out, right? Wrong!

We’re not trying to bribe our way into that ’employee of the month’ list by saying so, but truth be told, we had a blast at our latest team workshop (our smiley faces in the photos above are proof enough).

The workshop which was organised and hosted by the newly opened Celebrations & Events Centre at The Singapore Resort & Spa Sentosa, managed to combine work and play perfectly with a few perks in between.

Nestled away from the hustle and bustle of the city – and worlds apart from our office in the CBD area – the venue stands alone from the main hotel lobby surrounded by natural scenery and overlooking the blue ocean. The design of the centre is luxurious, laid-back and spacious making it an unexpectedly perfect place to hold team-building and corporate workshops in a relaxing environment which encourages creativity and a friendly atmosphere.

What to expect?

Making our way to Sentosa at 8:30 am, we didn’t know what to expect from this workshop especially as the venue was not what we’d normally associate with stressful work functions.

Once at the venue, it was clear to us that this was no ‘one meeting room’ type of place and we were pleasantly surprised by the venue’s serene surrounding. It felt like it we were on a weekend staycation.

Breakfast was served in the outdoor open area overlooking the South China sea where we got the chance to casually chat while having our caffeine fix and a healthy dose of yoghurt and fresh fruits. With a couple of colourful peacocks in sight and a refreshing breeze, our day couldn’t have started any better.

Almost two hours of team-building activities followed. Planned and conducted by FOCUS Adventure, they had us exchange unusual greetings, give eachother shoulder massages and compete in a team-building challenge which had us running around burning those calories.

Fun as it was, we also came out knowing more about eachother and learning about how to work in a team and face challenges together. After all, it was called team-building activity for a reason, no?

A delicious 3-course lunch was served after the first workshop session at The Singapore Resort and Spa Sentosa‘s charming newly re-opened The Garden restaurant situated just a short buggy ride from the centre. The food was light and fresh starting with vanilla-infused seared Hokkaido scallop, followed by the free range chicken in seaweed roulade accompanied with lightly sautéed caponata, baby beet fondue and caramelized tamarind sauce. Our meal ended with a light dessert of chilled aloe vera and mint jelly served in whole coconut. Yum!

The afternoon was when most of the work was done. The meeting room was transformed between sessions to a more relaxed setting complete with beanbags and sofas allowing the team to relax during the open discussion.

Cupcakes with our magazines’ logos and employees names made everyone smile during the tea/coffee break and the beautifully-crafted macarons and chocolate truffles proved popular with sweet-toothed among us.

The whole day was wrapped up nicely with cocktails at The Pavilion where we sipped on mojitos and cosmos and feasted on light canapés, satay and pizza.

Productive, relaxed and fun – the workshop was a great way to start the second half of the year re-energized and feeling stronger as a team which is really the point of a day like this.
