Unhook from sleeping pills: Find the right timing

To have the odds in your favour, it is better to stop sleeping pills when you are relaxed. And why not do so during the holidays?

To avoid a rebound of insomnia and even an eventual withdrawal syndrome leading to resume sleeping pills – and often at higher doses – one should never abruptly stop the medication. The reduction must be gradual and it cannot be decided overnight in order to prep the body.

WHEN SHOULD YOU START WITHDRAWING FROM SLEEPING PILLS?

To put yourself in the best conditions, you cannot begin if you are overwhelmed by stress or if you just went through a painful episode in your life. “The holiday period is conducive to embark on the path of withdrawal; the pace is generally slower and it is more relaxed. In all cases, discuss with your doctor beforehand because there are things to put in place well before tackling directly when it comes to drugs,” insists Séverine Brown, a psychologist specializing in the treatment of insomnia*.

Thus, identifying the causes of one’s insomnia and gradually resuming control of their sleep are key steps that should not be neglected for any reason.
