Vu Ta Linh from Vietnam and Sun Yijin from China showcase their capsule collections after winning last year’s Audi Star Creation competition.

Intricate, luxurious and impeccable – it is hard to believe that the collections we saw at his show came from young – and new to the industry – designers who won last year’s Audi Star Creation competition.

Exactly a year after taking home a cash prize of S$10,000 and completing a one year internship at luxury retailers F J Benjamin, both designers – Vu Ta Linh (Vietnam) and Sun Yijin (China) have stepped up their game and showed a lot of growth in their first capsule collections which were debut during this year’s Audi Fashion Festival.

Vu Ta Linh‘s ‘Indigo’ collection which was inspired by a Vietnamese song of the same title, aimed to show the creative ‘freedom’ which the designer values so much. The combination of beautiful and rich textures, fabric manipulation, creative draping and ingenious layering was outstanding, and with every piece there was something new especially when it came to details. Effortless, creative yet sophisticated – we love the versatility which the most of the pieces demonstrated – from dresses to jackets, shorts and tops. But perhaps what stood out the most is the way this young designer has managed to combine so many elements harmoniously and create stunning pieces which would look right at home in any luxury department store.

Sun Yijin‘s label KSANYUSUN collection was equally outstanding. Entitled ‘ Winter’, the designer imaged through her designs what this season would look like in a place like Singapore – where she had spent the last year living to complete her internship.

Elegant and breezy – the collection showed great skill in fabric and textile work – something which the designer is very passionate about. From delicate monochrome 3D flowers on silk dresses and tops to stunning knits which looked immaculate especially when it came to finishing. We also loved the breezy layered chiffon separates which boasted very clever and subtle thread embroidery work for that unexpected touch.

Despite their very different approaches, both young designers have demonstrated a great deal of sophistication and creativity in their collections. Could this be a stepping stone to a bigger success, perhaps even beyond Asia? We certainly believe so!
