If you’re looking to add a whole lot more vibrancy to your wardrobe, look to Singapore-based label, AWOL. You’ll definitely get colour from them.
On multiple occasions, Singapore has been lambasted for being a dull and dreary city with no life whatsoever. However, it’s usually a matter of people not being able to see past the tall ivory-esque skyscrapers because if they do, then a small but growing sea of peppy colours and dynamic prints will no doubt welcome them.
And for that particular scene, we can give credit to some of Singapore’s gems in the fashion industry, such as AWOL – an acronym for ‘All Walks Of Life’. Founded by Alfie Leong, the designer sees women as portraying a myriad of different roles in their lives and yet believes that this shouldn’t restrict their sense of style in any way. Hence, by focusing on delivering a spirited range of designs, AWOL hardly disappoints as evident in their latest Fall/ Winter 2014 collection.
Decked out in a multi-coloured houndstooth prints and unconventional – and at times avant-garde – silhouettes, the lineup boldly brings forth Alfie’s quirky, experimental nature. Akin to Japanese designer, Yohji Yamamoto’s atypical aesthetic, AWOL proves that it doesn’t quite blend in with the industry’s forecasted trends and colours. Instead Alfie plays by his own rules in a bid to celebrate individuality in this grand fashion blur.
Sure, the collection may not be everyone’s cup of tea per se but given the chance, one could play down the exaggerated drapes and saturated colours simply by ensuring the rest of the outfit is kept minimal. Pair the olive green top with black cigarette pants for instance and you’d be raring to go for a night out. Ultimately, it’s just a dance around proportions.
With designers like Alfie brightening up Singapore’s streets, it’s sooner rather than later that we’ll start seeing oodles of colours dotting out little island – even before we look past the skyscrapers.
