Question from Marie,36, Paris: “Can you wear gold with silver jewellery? Or is it considered bad taste?”

Marie France answers:

Yes you can! Back in the old days, it was once forbidden to mix the two metals (gold and silver) together for fear of reducing the value of the gold. The jeweller Cartier challenged this tradition in 1925 with his creation of the Trinity Ring – three rings with three kinds of gold: rose for love, yellow for faithfulness and grey for friendship; and thus the style began.

Jewellery designer Helene Zubeldia says: “Mixing gold and silver is very flattering in minimal and contemporary pieces. However, it is not the case for baroque and more elaborate styles.”

Moreover, Catherine Bezard, author of Fashion for Dummies, had noted that “During her time, Coco Chanel – and later Loulou de la Falaise who designed jewellery for Yves Saint Laurent – were both fascinated by the combination of gold and silver. Do as they did!”

One thing is for certain then; mixing your jewellery is definitely not in bad taste!
