Instead of heading to the malls all the time, why not explore some neighbourhoods around town? This week, we show you what stores to check out in one of the oldest estates.

Sometimes the best places to visit are just right there in your neighbourhood. Unless of course you live in Orchard Road, then yes you’ll need to venture out if you want something beyond the glassy malls.

This week, we’ll be heading into the now very much hipster locale, we’ve long known as Tiong Bahru. The housing estate was in fact one of the oldest in Singapore, established in a bid to offer a home to Singaporeans en-masse. While many may have moved out of the neighbourhood in favour of swanky, modern condominiums and estates, in recent years, the opposite has been true with more people returning and re-discovering the place’s beautiful old charm.

So much so that the neighbourhood has become a magnet for hipster culture, what with the opening of rustic-looking cafes, male grooming salons, independent bookshops and quirky stores with kitschy finds setting up home base there. Well, we’re not complaining and instead have found ourselves many a times meandering through the shophouses and alleyways wondering what we’ll discover with every turn at the corner.

The next time you find yourselves there, be sure to check out our guide to the neighbourhood and note down these must-visit place to make your Tiong Bahru experience a truly fulfilling one.
