The esteemed literary icon has been hand-picked by Phoebe Philo to grace Celine’s Spring/ Summer 2015 campaign.

Age is just a number. We often hear that being thrown around when a older woman dates a younger man but never when it comes fashion editorials and runways – it’s always the younger the better because here age is not just a number, it needs to be a small number.

Well, French luxury label, Celine is throwing all that jibber jabber out the window by anointing legendary author, Joan Didion, aged 80, as their resident cool girl. The prolific American writer found fame when she moved up the ranks from Vogue’s copywriter to associate features editor back in the 60s. From then on she began her effortless style streak but has never quite seen herself as a fashion icon – clearly Phoebe Philo thinks otherwise and so do we.

Lensed by Juergen Teller, Didion exemplifies the true epitome of graceful aging as she poses impassively in her signature bob and a pair of statement black sunglasses from Celine. As more and more brands begin to stray away from the conventional definition of a campaign star – tall, skinny and young – we’re certain that the industry may just be headed in the right direction, albeit slowly.

This ad campaign also comes with perfect timing for the reclusive novelist may just see a documentary of her life released, courtesy of her nephew, Griffin Dunne. Titled, ‘We Tell Ourselves Stories In Order to Live‘, Dunne is producing the first and only documentary about Didion.

Now it’s apparent that Didion is not only an indelible part of the literary world but quite the sartorial genius in minimalist style.
