From harem trousers to tweed suits and shisha pipes, the Chanel cruise show was as extravagant as it was authentic.

Beyond its rich supply of oil and tallest man-made sky scraper, Dubai was only the backdrop to a stunning display of Chanel’s Cruise show. Cruise collections have become the largest revenue-spiking seasons and for that reason, brands pull out all the stops to deliver an absolutely jaw-dropping spectacle.

Held at the man-made island, dubbed, ‘The Island’, just off the Dubai coast, the show was revving up enthusiasm as guest from all over were flown in. Celebrities such as Tilda Swinton, Vanessa Paradis and Dakota Fanning were whisked off to Bedouin-esque tents adorned with shisha pipes before heading to the massive box structure laced in interlocking Cs fretwork.

Karl Lagerfeld typically takes inspiration from the location of his show for the cruise collections and this one was no different. It was a medley of intricate embroidery, prints inspired by centuries old Islamic tiles, 70s silhouettes, laser cut geometrics, harem trousers and oversized billowy pieces that the clientele would promptly pack for sunny locales. What resonated clearly was Lagerfeld’s respect for modesty in this part of the world as the pieces were mostly well covered-up with minimal shoulder or leg on display.

Knowing Lagerfeld’s indisputable humour, we knew an ironic jab was coming and it finally did in the form of leather quilted oil canister bags carried towards the end of the 50-look odd mammoth of a show. Because when in Dubai, oil always takes center stage.
