Who knew Valentino could meld florals and the military so beautifully?

Spring often heralds in bright, saturated colours, representing a fresh burst of energy and life after the dreary winter cold. Pre-spring collections, more commonly referred to as resort wear are well-curated edits to prepare you for full-blown spring, if you will. Valentino’s resort wear is an elegant mix of florals, stripes, lace, military touches and of course neon hues.

The collection aims to ease you into the idea of spring by presenting a selection of classic navy blue and neutral themes before moving on to floral macramé and lace. Finally, the inclusion of camouflage prints – a huge trend for spring – in traditional green or in re-appropriated shades serve to create a utilitarian vibe, overlapping both masculine and feminine elements naturally.

Silhouettes are sleek, flirty and at other times reminiscent of the regimental uniform with large buttons set in a double-breasted frame. Essentially, the collection seeks a contrast between two worlds a woman traverses in – the exquisite lane of femininity and the rigorous path of the working world. The range is also punctuated with strong shades of pastels in pink, green and cream, with schoolgirl capes, knee-length boots and shift dresses. It evokes a classic 20th century Europe, fog-riddled and idealistic in vision.

The label’s designers, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli, managed to effectively weave a collection best suited for the urban woman today. She is one who knows when to inject life and a burst of energy to her wardrobe, yet understands the need for a monochromatic embrace. Ideally, the best of both worlds would build a cohesive and versatile wardrobe, as Valentino has done.
