Black Brilliance: Kimberly McDonald opal and diamond ring

Who needs a diamond ring when you could have what resembles a stunning starry night on your finger? Here’s why we’d trade all our bling for this one dark and mysterious beauty…

opal ring

Why we love it:

Known to bring luck and inspiration to its wearer, opal is probably the most underrated gemstone there is. Although back in the early 20th century opals were widely popular, these unique stones have now somehow lost their popularity to diamonds and other gems, perhaps due to old superstitions and beliefs – especially those stemming from Walter Scott’s novel, Anne of Geierstein in 1829.

To me however, there are more reasons to love opals than not. Fiery, distinctive and possessing countless shades and colours, opals are as magical as a gem stone could be. And I don’t mean that in the voodoo sense.

However, my obsession with this beautiful stone – and this particular stunning black opal ring – comes not just from its brilliance and beauty but also from the fact that its ever-changing intense colours resemble a scene from outer space with all its mystery and charm. Something like clear a starry night, only more colourful.

Set elegantly in a simple rose gold frame which contours the natural cut of the stone, the 8.20 carat opal is encircled with 28 diamonds mounting to a total of 0.42 carats that complements the centre stone’s beauty without overshadowing it.

I especially love the irregular cut of the diamond and the intense shades of blue and green diffracting from within.

So while diamonds might have been Marylin Monroe’s best friend, opals are definitely mine!
