Elegant, chic and understated – the midi skirt is one of the hottest trends for fall/winter. Here’s how to rock it failproof!

A preview of this fall’s fashion trends has seen transgressive punk outfits and tartan dresses, sharing the runway with the 70s, the 50s, all the way back to Alexander McQueen’s Elizabethan era.

Our eye fell on the midi skirts.

Autumn will have formal midi skirts, suitable for work, like those soberly designed by Balenciaga and Jil Sander, as well as airy bell-shaped skirts reminiscent of 50s prom nights, to be flaunted when outdoors.

But the look that we want to take and make our own – and that will have everyone turn their heads at you strutting on the sidewalk – is the midi skirt paired with an off-shoulder top.

This look has been amiably featured on Prada’s Fall 2013 Campaign (photo below) and leaves enough room to be creative in terms of colour and texture.

All you need to do to achieve this look is to pair a midi skirt, either tubular or bell shaped depending on the occasion, with a naked shoulder top and accessorise with a wide belt to join the two pieces.

– Heeled sandals should be within the colour range of the skirt.

– The décolleté is left bare and accessory free to avoid over-doing it.

– Lacking a naked shoulder top, you can find any wide V neck with buttons inside the wardrobe and undo the top buttons to allow the shoulders to reveal a broader portion of the neckline.

– For the finishing touch, use a hair gel with wet finish, to create that “just out of the gym”,  rushed but nonchalant effect.
