Hot trend: Rock in the City

All the tips and inspiration you need on how to tame that bang-on-trend Rock look – as seen on the Saint Laurent catwalk for Fall/Winter 2013-14

We all love rock n roll, But that edgy rebel look is a bit extreme for the workaday woman right?

Wrong. Anyone who says you cannot ‘rock’ up to the office with a touch of grunge in your outfit needs a slap across the face with a skull print bandana.

The great news for those of us fond of the 80s and 90s fashion is that this fall has been very much inspired by the punk and rock trends which shaped those – like us – who grew up with it.

But that doesn’t mean these trends don’t take a cowboy boot full of courage to pull off, even though this 2013 version is more ‘rock chic’ than ‘rock chick’.

As usual – that’s where we come in. Our Marie France fashion team in Paris have shot this rock-inspired editorial to give you inspiration – along with some tips – on how to be an every day rocker and still wow the girls at the office…

1- Adjust the proportions:

For a perfect execution, forget the unbuttoned over-sized shirts and go for an over-sized structured jacket instead. It holds the look together and add a tailored effect to balance the ‘rock’ vibe.

(Wool jacket: Swildens – Chiffon top: Heimstone – Fitted trousers: Joe’s – Cuffs: Hermés – Boots: Swildens).

2- Working the contrasts:

the zip skirt might look too casual and teeny-tweeny if worn with equally casual tops and shirts. The trick is to team it with something more ‘mature’ like a mohair knit sweater and dress it up a little.

(Mohair sweater: Gat Rimon – Skirt: Maje – Bag: Marc by Marc Jacobs – Tights: Wolford).

3- Lady-like rocker

Work that perfect leather jacket by teaming it with impossibly-elegant pencil skirt. This Rocker-cum-office lady look is a killer!

(Leather Jacket: April, May – Silk and lace blouse: Les Petites – Skirt: 1.2.3 – Ring: Dinh Van).

4- Lighten up:

Rock doesn’t necessarily mean black and leather. The cool attitude can be translated by teaming some cut-off denims with a white shirt and a cool and effortless dark sweater. Black sandals and socks complete this breezy take-on the rock trend which can be worn everyday.

(Sweatshirt: APC – Cotton shirt: Bruce Field – Denim jeans: Laurene Doligé – Bracelets: Pascale Monvoisin – Belt: Richard Gampel – Socks: Espirit – Sandals: Marc by Marc Jacobs).

 5- Bring on the accessories:

If you live in country where winter is chilly, you wouldn’t want to miss this season’s must-have accessory: the large and chunky knitted cap! Rock it on those cold and rainy days or just to make a fashion statement.

(Wool jacket: Tara Jarmon – Shirt: American Retro – Cap: Stylist’s own).

6- Dress it up:

Thought a true rock chick cannot pull off a dress? Think again. All you need is to team an ultra-feminine dress (preferably one in a dark colour) with some kick-ass biker boots and fishnet tights. A perfect way to show your rebellious side while still looking sexy and feminine).

(Georgette silk dress: Athé Vanessa Bruno – Scarf: Faliero Sarti – Necklace: Justine Clenquet – Tights: Le Bourget – Boots: Zadig & Voltaire).
