7 Things to know about your jeans
updated the 29 November 2015 à 21:19From how to choose your jeans to washing them, there’s always a lot of questions regarding the good old denim. So here’s a handy guide just for you.
1. CHOOSE THE RIGHT SIZE
It’s not easy to choose the right size of jeans, especially when it tends to expand slightly over time.
If you can barely close the last button when trying, do not panic. Get the jeans in your size anyway and with one or two wears, it’ll start to fit perfectly.
2. Do not wash jeans regularly
“My jeans do not need to approach a washing machine!” said Chip Bergh, President of Levi’s.
Contrary to popular belief, you can go without washing your jeans for several months, especially if you have chosen a dark blue colour that does not fade. And no, it is not disgusting. A study by On Alberta University has shown that raw denim jeans worn 15 months without washing, contained as many bacteria after 2 weeks of a machine run.
3. Wash delicately
For all jeans, but especially for dark fabrics (indigo or black), choose a delicate wash cycle or even better hand wash it. To avoid traces of unsightly wrinkles, wash them inside out.
Finally, again for the same dark colours, consider using a special detergent for dark colours and set the colour by pouring a dose of alcohol and white vinegar.
4. NEED FOR an alteration
With the washing machine, some models may lose a few millimeters or even a good centimeter. Hence it is essential to wash your jeans once or twice, before starting any alterations on the length.
5. FOR SMALL TASKS NEED NOT WASH
If your jeans are stained, there is still time to spare it a run in the washing machine. For small stains gently rub with a toothbrush that’s moistened with warm water.
6. THERE ARE MANY TIPS to GET RID OF SMELL
For those who’re fans of not washing your jeans, it may be difficult to always keep them fresh as when you first got them. Yet there are plenty of tricks…
- Hang your jeans in your bathroom before taking your shower, the steam will effectively remove stubborn odors.
- Leave your jeans to air every evening on your balcony
- Put it inside a plastic bag and place it in the freezer for 1 or 2 days
7. Jeans deserve to be out
If there’s one thing to remember is that jeans need to breathe. The denim fabric must be allowed to ventilate. So before storage, please leave it in the open air a day after wearing.
