Style Handbook: How to look 10 years younger in 10 minutes
updated the Monday, August 29, 2016A revolutionary new facelift? A miracle potion? Nope. Here are some fashion tips to revitalise your youthful looks without looking ridiculous!
If your morale is low due to your tired looks, you might be thinking of a fashion facelift. Guaranteed to be completely free of pain and physical effort (phew), the advice we are about to give you will rewind the clock and make you look younger without the need for a disguise!
Choosing the right colour
Black, of course, creates a slimmer silhouette. And when you look slimmer, you also look younger. But as we age, our skin develops wrinkles and starts to sag, which the colour black tends to highlight. To avoid this, bet on colours like navy, burgundy or tree green. A bright splash of colour is ideal for appearing young and trendy. Shades of grey or beige, especially on a figure without form, will age you needlessly. Even if you were to add just a single colourful piece to your ensemble, you will be boosting your look effortlessly.
Lighten up your layers
Piling on the layers is a bad idea. The additional fabric can give you a “heavy” look, and therefore an aging silhouette. Stop hiding under accumulated layers that create a blocky form – try to create intelligent structure instead. Ditto for shoes: put on some heels instead of footwear with blocky, square ends.
A good bra helps
We cannot emphasise it enough: nothing beats a good bra. Try on several at the store, don’t just settle for the first one you pick that fits you. Different bras result in different postures and shapes underneath your tops, so you’ll want to find something that aids and supports your bust. Poor support can make you look many years older. Everyone should seek advice at least once in the shop to know your true size and to find the perfect bra. And as a small bonus, you might want to try shapewear, and not just once a year under that Christmas dress.
A good skirt makes all the difference
Shapeless skirts that fall over your ankles can kill your looks immediately. You can look 10 years younger by ditching the maxi. But there’s no need to go above the knee to look younger. Everything is in the form. Pleated or pencil skirts can change your look, even if they happen to fall mid-calf (for those who do not like to show off too much skin) – a feminine skirt paired with heels will no doubt make you look youthful.
THE PERFECT JEANS
No, “mum jeans” do not make mums look younger. Those over-washed, high waist, 80s wide cut jeans are totally unflattering. It’s better to adopt the sharp style of your daughter and grab some jeans that won’t look out of place as casual chic officewear. We recommend straight cut or skinny jeans in dark cloth.
Banish the stretch
Sure, they’re comfortable, easy and so cozy. But tight and stretchy clothing are not the most flattering. They highlight even the smallest lumps and bumps, including our underwear lines. Not glamorous at all.
THE IMPORTANCE OF THE ACCESSORY
A simple accessory can save an outfit. A fancy scarf, a single cameo brooch on a jacket, a lovely bandana… Try to go for young and modern accessories and avoid prints and patterns that are old fashioned. Also, beware of the shape of your glasses: narrow rectangular frames might not be the most modern look right now. Perhaps try some rounded frames.
