updated the 15 August 2017 à 12:03Look forward to wearing the pants at work with these 12 replicable looks.
Practical, comfortable, and versatile, pants are a wardrobe staple for any working woman. While most women today wouldn’t think twice about reaching for a pair of pants, this hasn’t always been the case for the fairer sex.
In the past, women only wore dresses and skirts, whereas pants were reserved strictly for men. In the late 1800s, women started to wear pants for industrial work as a form of practical workwear. However, it was only in the 1920s and and 30s that women began to incorporate pants as leisurewear. Hollywood actresses Katharine Hepburn and Marlene Dietrich, who caused an uproar when they were spotted wearing them, popularised the trend. Even so, women could not simply wear pants whenever they wished. They were mostly limited to wearing pants for certain activities, such as cycling and tennis. Only in the 1970s did pants finally secure their place in the realm of women’s clothing, be it for business or recreation purposes.
It’s fortunate that modern women generally no longer have to worry about whether it’s acceptable to wear pants. We even have the freedom to be creative with how we dress! A more relatable problem today is treading the fine line between fashion and function. However, with the availability of different cuts, materials, and colours, finding the perfect pair of work-friendly pants isn’t difficult task.
