Tribal chic!
updated the 7 October 2015 à 00:07From Aztec to Indian, African and Asian… join the ‘chic tribe’ and learn how to rock this trend in style.
Gone are the days when ethnic-inspired fashion was just for hippies and bohemians. Thanks to designers such as Matthew Williamson and Holly Fulton who took inspiration from the Indian and the Aztec cultures (respectively), yet presented highly-wearable elegant looks on their SS13 runways.
We love this trend because it encourages us to experiment with colour, print and texture and brings a cultural element to our everyday dressing.
Knitted, braided or woven – graphic geometric prints, beads, embroidery and even pompoms; this trend might look too much at first glance but with these tips, you can still rock it without looking like you belong to the tribe – unless it is the ‘Chic’ tribe of course!
Clothes:
– The first trick is knowing how to balance the look; complement the richness of the colours and prints in tribal-inspired pieces by mixing them with ultra urban basics like a faded denim shorts or a crisp white shirt. Chic monochrome heels also help tone down the look.
– One statement piece like a jacket, skirt or dress is enough– keep the rest of the look simple and don’t accessorize too much.
– If you don’t like bold colours on your skin, go for printed trousers with a plain top instead. Be warned though, they can be tricky so make sure you get a good quality pair in the right cut to avoid it looking like pyjama bottoms.
– Choose a soft and elegant silhouette especially if the print is bold and geometric. This will refine the look and make it more city chic than out of the jungle!

– Go for big statement jewellery pieces, whether it is a necklace, bangles or earrings. The bigger, the better as long as it fits your proportions and does not drown you.
– A colourful clutch or printed high-heeled sandals can work wonders for a cocktail dress and ensure you are on trend.
– Team your favourite jeans and plain white T. with flat beaded sandals, a belt and a few bangles for a relaxed and more subtle look.
