Lying in the corner of the hip Kuta beach – yet apart from fast food chains – Sembilan stands out as a Balinese dining in a new level.

For frequent visitors to Bali, Kuta beach might be the last choice for dining out. The crowded strip is filled with McDonald’s, Starbucks, and other chains. The BeachWalk shopping mall offers just anything can be found in Jakarta. Yet, next to it, at the very corner of the strip, right before the turn towards Jalan Legian, a semi al-fresco dining place has become the new destination for foodies in the island.

Sembilan – or “9” – declares itself as a “Balinese Responsible Dining”. The tagline is applied to Sembilan’s policy in translating the cuisine de terroir concept. Sourcing all the fresh ingredients and produces only from 100 miles around the point of its location, Sembilan makes sure that everything is fresh, flavourful, and seasonal. Furthermore, there is far less carbon foot print, and more support to the local industry. For not only Sembilan directly works with the local farmers and fishermen, but 3% of what customers spend will go back to them.

The scene still fits the relaxed beach style that also manages to blend traditional Balinese elements with contemporary lines. Must-tries include Pelalah Chicken and Saté Lilit – or fish satay on lemongrass stick that comes with Sambal Matah the spicy Balinese sauce. Indonesian salad, better known as Gado-Gado, comes in a modern interpretation without sacrificing the genuine nutty flavours. Ceramcam Ayam, or Balinese clear chicken soup, is a comfort for the throat and tummy.

Check out the special nights that serve suckling pig and winning buffet deal. Sembilan also lists Balinese wine that surely matches both the food and the island’s ambience.

Sembilan restaurant opens for dinner only, located in Pullman Bali Legian Nirwana hotel, Jalan Melasti, Legian, Bali 80361, Tel: +62-361-762500.
