Food ignorance encourages unhealthy eating habits and obesity.

Parents love watching cooking shows on television, such as Master Chef and Top Chef, but ironically, their own children aren’t able to recognize the food they eat!

A survey was conducted among 910 children in the Provence region and revealed that one child in three is unable to identify a leek, zucchini, artichoke or a fig. From a row of pictures of food, 87% of the children surveyed did not know what a beetroot looks like.

Questions about processed foods also revealed that 40% do not know what chips, ham and nuggets are made of; Only 25% know that fries are made from potatoes.

The ASEF (French Environmental Health Association) in France, who conducted the survey has called for a national awareness campaign for families and provided the questionnaire (to test the children) as well as a little gourmet guide to provide a guide on the fundamentals of healthy eating for the family.
