How to beat those Monday blues?

updated the 14 July 2015 à 18:30

Get psyched for the week ahead and crush those gloomy thoughts right at the bud.

A US study shows that women with job authority are more vulnerable to depressive symptoms than women without. But it's quite the opposite for men - those with authority are generally less depressed than those without. In a different light, with bigger power comes bigger responsibilities, right? That explains our mechanism. But this doesn't mean that we belong at home and not the office.*Journal of Health and Social Behavior, December 2014

Is the thought of Monday getting you down? Quit shuffling and dragging your feet as once this day is over you are one more step closer to Friday and the uber fun weekend.

A report in The Telegraph stated that researchers found workers get the Monday blues so bad, they don’t even crack a smile until 11.16am. The same report also wrote the most will only average a productive 3.5 hours of work.

Well we say turn that frown upside down and get things moving as the quicker the day is over, the faster you get to go do fun things.

Here is Marie France Asia’s tips on getting up and over the gloomy Monday.

1) Get a yummy breakfast.

If you have no time to prepare breakfast in the morning, simply head to your favourite patisserie and get a pick-me-up pain au chocolat. How can you possibly be grumpy after a sweet chocolatey treat? Or prep a mason jar of overnight oats for a energy-filled breakfast in the office.

2) Go out during the week.

Who says fun days are only allocated for the weekends? Make plans to see your friends during the week for movie dates, dinner dates, cafe hopping, etc. May we suggest a fun movie like Pitch Perfect 2 for some mid-week laughs with Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson).

3) Pick out a chic outfit

Make extra effort to look beautiful on Monday. Even though you may be feeling lackadaisical and kind of meh, picking out an awesome new outfit and planning your debut OOTD for the week gives you an extra confidence boost to face the day.

4) Make your own “Get Psyched” playlist.

Remember when Barney Stinson on How I Met Your Mother had his own pre-party playlist to ‘get psyched’ before a big night out. Do the same before going off to work or on your daily commute. Pick a selection of upbeat songs using iTunes, Spotify or Deezer to curate your songs with ease.

5) Make plans for the weekend

Fast-forward your week by making fun plans in advance. These plans keep you going in order to get to that fun night out with the girls or with your beau.

6) Mid-day treat

Afternoon Llao Llao, anyone? If your office is located in the mall, pop out for a short 5 minutes to grab a sweet treat for a break. Fro-yo, chocolate puddings, waffles – the possibilities are endless. If you are feeling generous, buy a box of treats for the entire office or your department to cheer everyone else up in the process.

7) Figure out why you’re gloomy

If you’re constantly riddled with anxiety and dread about going back to work on Monday, perhaps it is time to take a good look at your career. Perhaps you’re in the wrong job if you hate it that much.

Ready to face the week now?
