Laurence, 45, says:

“My mother and my grandmother, Italian Jews, are both very superstitious and I inherited from them a heap of beliefs and actions to which I have been faithful to since my childhood. I do not tolerate any instances of passing salt from hand to hand, I shall never put a hat on a bed and in hotels, I spread some sugar in every corner of my room. As an atheist, I am well conscious that all these conjuring rituals do not have more impact than that. But, deep within myself, I tell myself that if in doubt, it is better to be faithful to these little arrangements in life, even if it means adapting to them based on circumstances. I remember, for example, I broke a mirror during a skiing holiday. Normally, the tradition is to throw the mirror fragments in the sea or in the river to avoid seven years of misfortune. Eventually, I told myself that snow had the same force as water: I buried the mirror pieces at the base of a tree and that’s it! The problem was fixed.”
