Mood: Could our temperament be related to our date of birth?

Being a Pisces, Leo, or Libra, could really have effect on our character. Nothing to do with the astrological sign, but a question of biochemistry.

Does being born in summer or winter really influence our way of seeing life or reacting to situations? This is what is suggested by the Hungarian research presented recently at the 27th Annual Congress of the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology in Berlin.

ARE WE MORE PRONE TO BEING CYCLOTHYMIC IF WE WERE BORN IN SUMMER?

According to researchers from the University of Medicine in Budapest, we cannot predict the character of somebody according to their date of birth. Nevertheless, it would seem that we may develop some types of temperament according to the season in which we were born. By comparing the character traits of 400 people with their dates of birth, the scientists were able to highlight some correlations. For example, those who were born in the summer time would have higher risks of suffering mood swings in adulthood. Those who were born in winter would generally be less irritable. Babies born in the autumn would be less subjected to depression, while those born in spring would tend to be more (sometimes overly) optimistic and cheerful.

THE ROLE OF BIOCHEMISTRY IN TEMPERAMENT

Dr Xenia Gonda, who managed this study prefers to stay cautious. It is too early to know the exact reasons for these predispositions but it seems that the season in which you were born influences the production of some neurotransmitters, such as dopamine and serotonin. These differences remain detectable in adulthood. Now the researchers will aim to find genetic markers that could be connected to the birth season, to temperament, and those that would possibly be a risk factor for some mood disorders, while not forgetting the role of the environment in determining the construction of an individual’s character.
