The biggest night of American cinema took place yesterday, and so did many surprises! We expected no less with host, Ellen Degeneres on the stage of the Kodak Theatre.

Gravity vs American Hustle

Given that both movies were winners in many ways: box office success, a unanimous positive critical response, and nominations with a vengeance, we expected a fierce battle for the Oscars where the two giants claimed 10 categories each. Director David O. Russell probably thought of reaping a harvest of rewards (7 nominations last year to Happiness Therapy) with American Hustle but he was not counting on Gravity to dominate the Oscars last night – neither did we.

The space blockbuster orchestrated by Alfonso Cuarón (director of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Children of Men) has been awarded seven Oscars, including Best Director, while David O. Russell’s team bagged none. He reassures his popularity has not been chipped though, quite the contrary!

Meryl Streep gives way to Cate Blanchett

With Dallas Buyers Club, Mathew McConaughey took sweet revenge on Hollywood yesterday. After his stints in sweet but stereotypical romantic comedies, recently the extent of his talent was witnessed. This time, he gave us goosebumps in the role of a homophobic cowboy diagnosed with HIV. His subtle and well-balanced performance earned him the Best Actor Oscar, leaving Leonardo DiCaprio to bite the dust, again.

Meryl Streep, the real record woman of nominations (18 to her name by the way!) bowed to the majestic Cate Blanchett for her remarkable Blue Jasmine performance directed by Woody Allen. After a few disappointments, the Australian actress finally wins for her role as a twisted and highly neurotic New York  socialite who loses it all and struggles with facing her new reality. A role she embodied perfectly and without the slightest fault.

Ellen’s antics and THAT epic selfie

But apart from winners and losers, the Oscars this year witnessed many light-hearted and funny moments – a  lot of them thanks to host Ellen Degeneres who stroke a chord with the audiences and celebrities alike.

A funny joke of ordering pizza to the ‘hungry crowds’ turned hilarious incident when the pizza delivery guy turned on stage to deliver it to the stars – many of whom tucked into a slice or two.

The memorable GIF of our favourite girl Jennifer Lawrence chewing on her pizza like no one is watching while someone was giving a speech took the internet by storm. So did her GIF when she fell the minute she got on the red carpet. Something she is now infamous for.

All in all, it was probably the most tame yet funny Oscars we had in a while! So congrats to Ellen and to all the winners. We can’t wait for next year!
