Is yellow flattering on Asian skin tones?
updated the 13 April 2018 à 18:09Thought yellow was simply ‘not your shade’? Think again.
Of all the shades in the colour wheel, yellow might be the shade that we veer towards least.
This is especially so for us Asians. Perhaps because of the yellower undertones in our complexion, we’ve somehow bought into the narrative that yellow is, well, just not our colour.
Hate to break it to you folks, but that’s simply not true. With summer inching closer on most corners of the globe, it’s time to bust out your canary yellows, mustards, lemons and all things sunshine.
Granted, Asian skin tones exists on a broad spectrum – but here are 6 foolproof ways you can introduce and rock yellow in your wardrobe:
6 STYLE TIPS TO WEAR YELLOW
- Wear a red lip. If you’re worried about looking washed out, pop on a bright crimson lip. It’s a quick and easy style trick we’ve observed on the likes of Chriselle Lim and Aimee Song.
- Intimidated? Start with yellow bottoms! Wearing a yellow dress or top might be tricky waters, as they’ll contrast with your face the most. If you’re new to the yellow style game, start with a yellow skirt or pants (a la Irene Kim).
- Gold accessories make all the difference. There’s something about the pairing of gold and yellow that is ridiculously flattering. Dress your decolletage with a dainty gold necklace or adorn your ears with statement gold earrings. One thing’s for sure – it will certainly not wash you out.
- Prints are a good way to introduce yellow into your wardrobe. A yellow floral print is a fun, summer-worthy and completely non-intimidating way to wear the shade.
- Embrace bold colour matches. The obvious way to wear yellow is to pair it with neutrals. Surprisingly, mustard and grey, yellow and bubblegum pink work as well – probably because yellow sometimes needs a strong colour it can hold up against.
- Or if not, stick to primary colours. If all else fails, yellow and whites or yellow with denim is a tried-and-tested way to win sartorial points.
