Son, you shall be a doctor! This is certainly the hope of 19% of parents for their children, globally. Engineering and Computer Science come as second vocation of choice afterwards. In Singapore, 15% of parents hope for their children to take on a career in Medicine, while 5% prefer Engineering and 6% root for Computer Science.

IT’S YOUR DESTINY!

Of the 5,550 parents surveyed by HSBC – in 16 countries – for the report entitled  The Value of Education, three-quarters have a favourite occupation for their children since their entry to kindergarten…! Note that 83% of parents also hope that their children will not occupy the same job as them.

HAPPINESS FOREMOST

The study, unveiled in mid-July, also details the motivations of parents surveyed. The majority (64%) would like, above all, the happiness of their offspring. This concern is particularly high in developed countries. And in Singapore, where the percentage is among the highest and amounts to 61%, parents revealed that their first objective is to see their children happy, ahead of career success (36%) and the adoption of a healthy lifestyle (32%).

Other concerns and criteria: the importance of having a good salary. In fact, 33% of Singaporean parents cite ‘earn enough to enjoy a comfortable life’ as a major criterion with a global average of 34% of respondents.
