Palawan, the Philippines
Palawan has just been named the best island in the world for the third year running, so is it any surprise that this is a brilliant place to stargaze as well? With clear seas in the magnificent bays found around the island, a beautiful array of creatures, the fact that it’s absolutely amazing at night is the icing on the cake. El Nido’s Nacpan Beach is our personal favourite.

Sapa, Vietnam
Up for a little adventure before you get greeted with an astonishing view of the stars and the rice terrace? Why not head down to Sapa in Vietnam? This mountainous town is a nine-hour train journey away from Hanoi, and can be accessed through a two-day trek or an hour long drive. But, once you have reached, be prepared to be wowed. With lush vegetations across rice terraces, it’ll almost seem like you’re transported into another land.

Koh Hai, Thailand
With the white sands that grazes the Andaman Sea, Koh Hai Island is a fantastic spot for couples seeking a romantic getaway. At the same time, it’s also the perfect place for stargazing enthusiast. Palm trees line the beaches, and relax in the resorts. After a long day of snorkelling in their clear water, relax on the beach as the sun sets magnificently, all while having an intimate and cosy feeling that’s hard to find elsewhere.

Sa Kaeo, Thailand
This eastern city of Sa Kaeo borders Cambodia, and is surrounded by many mountains and forests that truly shows off the history of the place. Though not particularly big, Sa Kaeo is home to many ancient monuments and architecture— and, compared to the populous city of Thailand, this is the brilliant place for stargazing with the Pang Sida National Park and Ta Phraya National Park, especially with its unique rock formations.

Borneo
As the third largest island in the world, Borneo is known by many for its rainforest with immense diversity and its national parks. But, more than that, Borneo is known for Mount Kinabalu, a mountain that pierces the clouds without fear and with an immense amount of gusto. Rest back and watch as the background of the mountain changes its colour and the stars begin to appear, and gape at the beauty of the world.

Banten, Indonesia
In the province of Banten, you can find a plethora of beautifully hidden spots where you can catch yourself having some personal time with the smell of the sea and the stars of the sky. The Sawarna Beach Beach and Karang Bolong Beach, for example, are beautiful places that have to be visited at least once, especially if you’re in the area. And, as the night comes up, marvel at the spectacle of the stars.

Mabul Island, Malaysia
Admittedly, Mabul Island might not be the safest place because of its pirates, so it probably is best to stay in neighbouring islands before making your way down. But, despite unfortunate circumstances, Mabul Island is a stunning place to dive, with turquoise water that’s nearly clear. The village on the island is incredibly friendly so, while making some new acquainteces, share the beauty of the stars with them.

Bagan, Myanmar
Unlike the more populated city of Yangon, the temple town of Bagan hasn’t had as much development and tourist, which means it’s definitely more suitable to view the night sky than its counterpart. Other than getting a clear view of the sky, stop by Nyaung U for authentic tea shops and the Buddhist temple of Shwezigon Paya. Or, pop into Myin Ka Bar for their lacquerware.

Perhentian, Malaysia
Near the south border of Thailand lies Perhentian, an island paradise, all protected as a marine park. This means you will be getting pristine beaches and clean dives into the sea, making this a lot more stunning than it already is. There are two main islands to go to; with the bigger one more suitable for families due to its higher price range, and the smaller one for backpackers. No matter where you go, the beach will provide a clear view of the sky.

Luang Prabang, Laos
Last but not the least, we have Laos’ Luang Prabang. Travelelrs to Laos are likely to focus their time on Vientiane, the capital. But, Luang Prabang is an ancient city which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and should not be missed as well. With exquisite waterfals and farms placed all around the city, every turn is like a mystery. The only thing that is certain is that you’ll get to see the stars like you’ve never seen them before.

The bright lights from the big cities are nice, but nothing beats the magic of the Milky Way and twinkling stars in the sky.
