Warning: Ace Hotel Downtown’s beds are so ridiculously comfy, you could very possibly sleep through the entire duration of your stay. Which would be a shame, as you’d miss out on all the hipster-seducing frills and fandangles, including the rooftop plunge pool and lounge, the pastry-toting coffee counter by the lobby, the celebrity-wooing restaurant and the rooftop cocktail bar. This is a hotel so sociable, you’d have to almost go out of your way not to make friends here; some rooms even come with acoustic Martin guitars, hinting at nocturnal jams. If you’ve eaten one too many pineapple-packed burgers, take yourself to the fourth-floor gym and channel Beyoncé for an hour or two.

There’s no risk of feeling lonely at this serene Sri Lankan hideaway, home to monkeys, mongooses and jewel-plumaged birds.
