A peek at the new fully solar-powered luxury Six Senses Fiji resort

Fully powered by solar energy, it certainly looks like the new Six Senses Fiji has struck the balance once again between luxury and sustainability.

With travelers and consumers slowly catching on the importance of embracing sustainability these days, more and more luxury brands are looking into expanding their market to the environmentally-conscious. The world of hotels and resorts is definitely not lagging behind on this trend, and the new Six Senses Fiji Resort might just be paving the way for a new league of sustainable resorts.

Introducing the new Six Senses Fiji, which just recently opened in April, where the all its villas and residences are fully solar-powered. Located in a secluded bay on Malolo Island, the Six Senses Fiji resort’s commitment to sustainability is branched into two fields: environmental responsibility and social responsibility.

A Fully Solar-Powered Luxury Resort

The highlight of Six Senses Fiji’s sustainability has to be the fact that 24 one-and two-bedroom pool villas and 10 private residences are 100 percent solar powered by a microgrid using Tesla batteries within the resort. In fact, this resort has one of the largest off-grid solar installations using Tesla Battery packs in the Southern Hemisphere!

In addition to their use of solar panels, the resort uses low power pool filtration in its swimming pools and low environmental impact refrigerant in all their air conditioning units that also have sensors that automatically switch off the air conditioning once doors are opened, in to conserve energy.

Six Senses Fiji has also extended their environmentally-friendly outreach to their waste management system, which uses tiger worms to convert food waste into sustainable fertilizer. This fertilizer, in turn, is used by the resort to grow their own herbs and vegetables in a special kitchen garden, which also houses produce that is used to create tonics, ginger beers, and probiotics within the resort.

All of these products are sold at the on-site deli. Furthermore, recyclable waste is sorted in the resort’s “recycling corner,” after which the items are shipped to Denarau Island on the return barges that bring food supplies twice a week.

Social Responsibility

The resort is also committed to employing its staff locally, with a large percentage of the hosts being of Fijian nationality. It also offers internships to high-performing students and work experience opportunities for university undergraduates majoring in tourism, and the resort boutique even stocks homeware items and handicrafts made by Fijian women living in remote communities.

Luxury travel designed with a social and eco-consciousness – the Six Sense Fiji certainly looks it’s certainly struck the balance once again between sustainability and luxury.
